What is the Risk of Gestational Diabetes

When you decide you are ready to become pregnant, it is wise to visit your doctor so he/she can evaluate the risk of gestational diabetes, as part of your overall health plan.

Once you become pregnant, your doctor will then monitor you for gestational diabetes as part of your regular prenatal care.

Pregnant Mummy The risk of gestational diabetes, it is more common in the last 3 months of pregnancy you will probably need more frequent checkups, so your doctor can monitor your blood sugar level, as well as your baby’s health.

Sometimes  a  doctor may refer a patient to a specialist in diabetes management, such as an endocrinologist, a registered dietitian or a diabetes educator. They can help you learn to manage your blood sugar level during your pregnancy.

To make sure that your blood sugar level has returned to normal after your baby is born, your Doctor will check your blood sugar right after delivery and again in six weeks, to make sure your blood Sugars have returned to normal.

If  you’ve had gestational diabetes, it’s a good idea to have your blood sugar level tested regularly, as well as keeping up a regular exercise program.

The frequency of blood glucose  tests will in part depend on your test results soon after the delivery of your baby.

New Baby If you have had gestational diabetes, you are more likely to develop type 2 Diabetes as you get older. So get a blood sugar Monitor  to keep a check yourself. If you join Diabetes Australia and you may be able to get the monitor a little cheaper.

As well in times of stress  or illness your blood sugars may rise and you may  notice symptoms such increased urination and excessive thirst,  and extreme fatigue,  if at these times you watch even more carefully your diet and keep a check on your blood sugar levels, you may avoid developing type 2 Diabetes
